Fact Check: Has Funke Akindele Established a “Jenifa Petroleum” Fuel Station?

The Claim

A post circulating on X (formerly Twitter), published by the account @imakun122 (Imakunblog) on 8 June 2026 at 2:31 PM, claims that Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened her own fuel station. The post reads: “Congratulations to Funke Akindele as she establishes her fuel station. Woman power…. To every hardworking woman, keep pushing, your testimony is on the way.”

The post carries a collage of images showing Akindele waving from a vehicle in branded attire, alongside photographs of a filling station bearing the name “JENIFA PETROLEUM,” with a woman in uniform posing in front of the pumps. At the time of capture, the post had recorded 43,300 views, 40 reposts, one quote, 652 likes and 12 bookmarks.

Background

Funke Akindele, popularly known by her screen character “Jenifa,” is one of Nigeria’s most successful filmmakers. She is the country’s highest-grossing director and the creator of the long-running Jenifa franchise, which began with the 2008 film Jenifa and now includes Jenifa’s Diary, Jenifa on Lockdown and the 2024 box-office hit Everybody Loves Jenifa. The character “Jenifa” is a registered creative property of her company, Funke Ayotunde Akindele Network (FAAN).

Akindele is also a genuine entrepreneur. She owns Scene One Productions and the Scene One School of Drama, runs the Jenifa Foundation, and in January 2025 opened a hospitality venue known as Jenifa Garden. This established track record of “Jenifa”-branded ventures is part of what makes a fabricated “Jenifa Petroleum” claim plausible to casual observers. The 2024 film Everybody Loves Jenifa also centres on themes of entrepreneurship and business, providing a ready setting for petrol-station scenes within the storyline.

Verification

The GRACO Fact Check conducted a multi-step verification process. First, the GRACO searched leading Nigerian news and entertainment platforms for any report of Funke Akindele launching, commissioning or acquiring a petrol station or a business named “Jenifa Petroleum.” A launch of this nature by one of Nigeria’s most prominent celebrities would attract widespread media coverage. No credible outlet, including Vanguard, Premium Times, Legit.ng or Guardian Nigeria, has reported any such venture.

Second, the GRACO examined the images in the post. The photographs carry visible watermarks reading “NOLLY MOVIES” and “NOLLY MOVIES LOVERS,” which identify them as film and entertainment content rather than coverage of a real business event. The “JENIFA PETROLEUM” branding visible on the pumps and signage is consistent with a movie set prop within the Jenifa franchise, not the livery of any licensed fuel marketer.

Third, the GRACO reviewed Funke Akindele’s verified and documented business interests. Her on-record ventures are concentrated in film production, drama training, hospitality (Jenifa Garden) and philanthropy. There is no record, on her official channels or in the public domain, of a petroleum or downstream-energy business. No registration, dealership or commissioning of a “Jenifa Petroleum” filling station has been documented by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority or reported by credible media.

Fourth, the GRACO assessed the source. The post originates from a blog-style aggregator account (@imakun122) rather than from Funke Akindele’s verified handles or any registered news organisation. The celebratory, share-driven framing (“Woman power… your testimony is on the way”) is characteristic of engagement-seeking content that repackages movie scenes as real-life events.

Findings

The GRACO Fact Check found that the claim that Funke Akindele has established a “Jenifa Petroleum” fuel station is not supported by any credible evidence. Specifically:

No reputable Nigerian news or entertainment outlet has reported Funke Akindele opening or owning a petrol station. The images circulated in the post bear “NOLLY MOVIES” entertainment watermarks, indicating they are film or screen content, and the “Jenifa Petroleum” branding is consistent with a movie set rather than a real, licensed filling station. Akindele’s documented businesses lie in film, drama training, hospitality and philanthropy, with no petroleum interest on record.

While Funke Akindele is a genuine and accomplished entrepreneur, and “Jenifa”-branded ventures such as Jenifa Garden do exist, the specific claim of a real “Jenifa Petroleum” fuel station presents fictional or promotional entertainment imagery as a factual business launch.

VERDICT: FALSE (MISLEADING).

Conclusion

The viral post claiming that Funke Akindele has established a “Jenifa Petroleum” fuel station is FALSE and misleading. The accompanying images are Nollywood entertainment content, marked with “NOLLY MOVIES” watermarks, and no credible source confirms that the actress owns or has launched any petrol station. The post repackages movie or promotional imagery as a real-life achievement. Members of the public are advised to rely on Funke Akindele’s verified channels and credible news organisations before sharing such claims as fact.
