Report: Protests, Information Manipulation And Rights Violations: Counting Costs of #EndBadGovernance Demonstrations

The #EndBadGovernance protests, which rocked Nigeria in August 2024 provide a snapshot of how citizens discontent about their economic realities can snowball into civic actions. These diverse forms of civic action could in turn be undermined by human rights violations of different shades. While scores of protesters genuinely tried to get their voices heard by invoking their fundamental right to peaceful protest, the impacts of information manipulation, lack of respect for the rule of law, state fragility and the absence of redress mechanisms, combined to undermine human and digital rights. In the protests under review, the rights of poor, vulnerable and historically marginalised citizens were grossly violated, leaving a trail of tears, sorrows and subsequent calls for justice.
