INEC As Hoc Staff Application: Key Details To Note

The Independent National Electoral Commission has opened applications for ad hoc staff who will run the 2027 general elections at the polling unit level, and for many Nigerians, especially corps members and students, this is one of the largest temporary employment openings the country will see before the polls. This explainer sets out who qualifies, what to prepare, how to apply and the pitfalls to avoid, drawing on the commission’s official public notice and its own published figures.
Start with the timeline, because it defines everything else. According to the notice issued by INEC, the recruitment portal, INECPRES, opened at 8am on Friday, 18 September 2026 and closes at midnight on Wednesday, 18 November 2026. The commission advised applicants not to wait until the final day, when server traffic is usually heaviest.
The jobs are tied to two separate polls. The Presidential and National Assembly elections hold on 16 January 2027, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections hold on 6 February 2027. Ad hoc staff are temporary workers who are recruited, trained and deployed for a specific election and released once it ends, so those engaged should expect a defined assignment rather than continuing employment.
The scale explains why the window matters. INEC has said it will deploy about 1.4 million ad hoc personnel across 176,846 polling units nationwide. The commission’s own breakdown puts the requirement at 707,384 staff for the January poll and the same number again for February, a combined 1,414,768. For comparison, INEC has said it deployed about 1.2 million ad hoc staff in 2023, with more than 70 per cent drawn from the NYSC and student volunteers.
On eligibility, the commission has stressed that requirements differ by position, institution, employment status and educational background, so the first task is matching yourself to the right category. According to the public notice, those who may apply include serving NYSC members, former corps members who meet the stated conditions, students of federal and state tertiary institutions, eligible federal and state government employees, permanent staff of ministries, departments and agencies, qualified INEC personnel, eligible ICT personnel, and staff of institutions hosting Registration Area Centres.
The roles themselves fall into five main categories. The commission listed Supervisory Presiding Officers, Presiding Officers, Assistant Presiding Officers, Registration Area Centre Managers, and Registration Area Technical Support personnel, known as RATECHs.
For Supervisory Presiding Officers, the notice covers federal public and civil servants and MDA staff, listing those on Grade Level 10 to 14 among the eligible, subject to conditions, with priority indicated for qualified staff of bodies such as the NYSC, NOA, NIMC and NPC. For Presiding Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers, the notice points to serving corps members, students in their penultimate year and students in years two and three of study, and permanent MDA staff with OND or NCE qualifications on Grade Level 07 to 10.
For Registration Area Centre Managers, the notice states that the head of a school hosting a RAC, or an eligible staff member of that institution, may qualify subject to a Grade Level 07 and above condition. RATECH roles target applicants with an ICT background, including IT students of tertiary institutions and former corps members who served with INEC, since these personnel provide technical support for the accreditation technology used at polling units.
Before starting, prospective applicants should gather their documents, because the form asks for accurate personal, educational and employment details. Based on the commission’s published requirements, applicants should have a functional email address and phone number, a personal bank account, a recent passport photograph, valid staff or student identification where applicable, relevant NYSC call up information for eligible corps members, qualification documents and a valid means of identification. Having these ready before you log in reduces errors and prevents a half completed application timing out.
The application process itself is straightforward. INEC directs applicants to visit the INECPRES web portal at pres.inecnigeria.org, or reach it through the official INEC website at inecnigeria.org, where an Android application is also available. The steps set out in the notice are to read the instructions and eligibility requirements, select the position for which you are eligible, complete the registration and enter your personal, educational and employment information accurately, provide the required supporting information, review everything, then submit. The commission advised applicants to keep their registration or application details for future reference. If you served as ad hoc staff in a previous election from 2019, your profile on the portal may still be active, in which case you would log in with existing credentials rather than open a new account.
A few conditions carry real weight. INEC’s rules require that applicants not be members of a political party and not have expressed support for any candidate or party, since impartiality is central to the role. Applicants are generally expected to reside in the state selected for their application, except where the specific rules for RATECH apply, and should apply only under the category that genuinely matches their status.
Finally, guard against fraud. The recruitment is free, and INEC’s only official platforms are pres.inecnigeria.org and its main website. The commission does not charge for a slot, so any demand for payment, or any site claiming to guarantee selection, should be treated as fraudulent. For genuine enquiries, the notice states that INEC’s IT Service Management runs a 24 hour helpdesk, reachable through the 0700 CALL INEC vanity number or by email at inecpress@inec.gov.ng. Verify any date, requirement or “portal now open” claim against the commission’s own channels before acting on it.
