International Women’s Day: GRACO Urges Collective Action To Strengthen Women Participation in Governance

As the world commemorates the 2026 International Women’s Day, the Grassroots Center for Rights & Civic Orientation (GRACO) joins millions around the globe in celebrating the contributions, resilience, and leadership provided by women in advancing development, democratic participation, the progress of their respective communities. The theme of this year’s celebration, “Give to Gain,” reminds that: “when societies invest in women, through education, skills, opportunities, and access to resources, developmental goals are achieved at a faster pace and communities are transformed. This position aligns with globally accepted norms, which make it apparent that empowering women is not merely an act of goodwill; it is a strategic investment in sustainable development and inclusive growth.

Nigeria has a long way to go in meeting up with the globally accepted benchmarks, which measure the level of progress in achieving women empowerment and participation in social, political and economic processes. Notwithstanding the immense talents, commitment and dedication demonstrated by women in shaping the fortunes of families, institutions, and communities, they continue to be held back by barriers, societal structures and norms. In terms of political representation at grassroots and national levels, the uneven playing field continue to skew processes against women. The slow pace in implementing legal reforms such as the Special Legislative Seats for Women Bill or the Reserved Seats for Women Bill 1349, continues to undermine efforts to shore up women participation in governance processes. Anomalies, including the heavy monetisation of politics, gendered disinformation, violation of digital rights and the rise of tech-facilitated gender-based violence, continue to dissuade and undermine women participation.

International Women’s Day therefore presents an opportunity not only to celebrate achievements but also to reaffirm the importance of creating environments where women can participate fully in social, economic, and civic life. Expanding access to education, supporting women’s leadership, and strengthening opportunities for meaningful participation in public life are essential for building stronger and more resilient societies. At GRACO, we are resolute in our conviction that women’s political, social and economic advancement strengthens communities and contributes to more inclusive governance systems. When women are empowered to contribute their ideas, talents, and leadership, institutions become more responsive and development outcomes become more sustainable.

In the spirit of this year’s theme, GRACO calls on governments, civil society organizations, development partners, and community leaders to intensify efforts in promoting initiatives and programmes that expand opportunities for women. These initiatives should be measurable and sustainable. In celebrating the 2026 International Women’s Day, GRACO reaffirms its commitment to promoting civic awareness, strengthening inclusive participation, and supporting initiatives that advance the inalienable rights and responsibilities of in the context of community and national development.
